This new social hub provides approximately 500m2 of retail and café space. A flexible sustainable approach was also adopted in the design of the building whereby it also acts a community hall when not being utilised as the farm shop. The new building comprises a steel frame with a mix of render and metal cladding elevations. The rural setting of the development brings unique challenges with respect to labour and materials, and these had to be considered in the overall design. Furthermore, there was no existing foul drainage network located in the vicinity of the site and a private sewage treatment plant had to be incorporated into the development. The Sustainable Urban Drainage (SUDs) approach for the site involved the discharge of surface water to the adjacent watercourse with treatment and attenuation being provided using a mix of open textured surfacing and permeable block paving.
