Bell Street

The original five storey former stable building on Bell Street, in the Merchant City area of Glasgow was converted to form 54 new flats. The site, formerly in use by the council cleansing department and mounted police division, comprised three separate buildings, arranged around a central courtyard. The poor condition of the building required extensive rot treatment works and re-roofing to be carried out. Structural works undertaken comprised the removal of an external covered walkway and erection of a new external access desk with standalone lift. To retain the original character of the building, many existing features were repurposed; the original cobbles surfaces were restored, horse stall dividers were reused within communal areas and the original access ramps that allowed horses access to stabling on the upper floors were retained, with new staircases constructed on top to serve the flats.
