Following a collapse of a wall at Oxgangs Primary School in 2016, G3 was requested to give advice to City of Edinburgh Council (CEC) regarding the potential structural risk on the remainder of the school estate. The main challenge with respect to delivering this assessment was developing the investigation process and the output that this would achieve, while under intense media and political scrutiny. Our phased assessment process was agreed in conjunction with all relevant stakeholders, commencing with a desk-based risk assessment to identify potential areas of concern. Where potential problems were established, exploratory intrusive investigations were undertaken, and, if defects were identified, remedial measures were designed and implemented. Once all schools had been assessed, our appointment was extended to cover further CEC building stock, which covered a wide variety of projects including community centres, industrial units, commercial premises and care homes.
