Springfield Cross

The development at Springfield Cross is a 6 storey, 36 unit block of flats and, at the time of construction was the largest Passivhaus development in Glasgow. G3 worked closely with the design team and the contractor to develop a structural solution which incorporated essential Passivhaus fabric enhancements to the insulation, air tightness and solar gains, whilst minimising thermal bridging in order to achieve Passivhaus standard.

The structural form of the six storey block comprised a masonry picture frame arrangement of the external façade to form a cantilevered brick beam and column arrangement over the structure below. This projecting masonry required careful consideration and collaboration with the architect to allow the structural support to be incorporated seamlessly into the building design.

The site was underlain by shallow mine workings and G3 designed, supervised and verified the treatment of these using grout consolidation. The piling foundation solution for the site was designed, taking cognisance and impact of the treated mine workings.
