Wellwynd Church

The project was commissioned by a joint venture between North Lanarkshire Council and Clyde Valley Housing Association to re-develop the ‘C’ listed former church building, which had lain derelict since 1995, to form a social enterprise centre. The centre provides accommodation within the existing church building and a new 2-3 storey extension for voluntary sector groups, such as charities and community organisations. There is also a cafe, shop, crèche, conference facilities and meeting rooms within the development. The façade and roof structure of the former church building were retained as part of the works. Internally the building was stripped back to a shell with all walls, stairs and first floor balcony removed. One of the major elements of engineering design was reducing the level of the ground floor below external ground level in order to fit the new steel structure beneath the existing roof level. This required extensive investigation to confirm the foundation to the external façade to ensure that this was not undermined as part of the works. Externally the site was also cleared to accommodate the extension to the existing building as well as a new on-site car park.
